The sun is rising and the sky is full of broken clouds. A bird darts across the sky, charting it’s course with a casual wingtip adjustment. It moves with the speed and sureness of a being that knows it’s purpose entirely in the moment. I, on the other hand, range and pace across the dew-wet grass. I climb up on a crumbling rock wall to watch the sun rise behind the witch’s eye. Dawn’s colors are fading fast and I take a few photos before settling into a seat on top of the wall, legs dangling. Gold creeps across the city below and paints the mountaintops we will climb in the coming days. It’s Sunday and any moment now the church bell will rumble  with a cacophonous thunder, calling the faithful to worship and irritating the rest of us.
